Days To Rejuvenate The Soul

Memorial Day has passed, which can mean only one thing for houses of worship near and far: There’s a lot more good seating available Sunday morning.

I could exhort the faithful here and everywhere to remain devoted during the dog days, reminding you that worship and ministry goes on even in this season of brunching in Blowing Rock or fishing at Folly Beach. But I’ve been around the church block long enough to know that spring and summer in the Carolinas comes not just with fried shrimp but with emptier pews.

So rather than beg and bully you to practice what Dr. Howell preaches, let me share some nuts-and-bolt ideas for keeping the faith in between naps on the hammock…

When you are in town, come see us. There’s worship, Sunday School, Freedom School, Summer Fun Days, Vacation Bible School, Family Promise and lots more. The church doors are always open no matter how many enter. Plus the air-conditioning works.

When you are out of town, whether for one weekend or one summer, find a house of worship to grace with your presence. We know lots of folks who take great comfort in having a faith home away from home, and a pastor and a congregation to call their own, if only for a season.

Be like Bill and Phyllis Spier and find a pet project. They are launching the fifth season of A Second Helping, collecting vacationers’ unused canned goods for the needy in Brunswick County. Rather than just sun and fish, the Spiers take great reward in devoting part of their summer at Holden Beach to serving others. Visit their website, www.secondhelping.us, to learn more. Whether you vacate to Brevard or Myrtle Beach, there can be a ministry with your name on it.

Summer faith can go beyond attending church or pursuing a pet project. Put down that mindless mystery and pick up a book that will stretch your mind or touch your heart. Turn off the TV and talk. Think deep thoughts during your walk on the beach. Keep praying, whether it’s at your bedside or in the screened-in porch.

The sun is shining. The time away from work is easing your mind. The family is together. Whether it involves taking a seat in the pew, casting a line or taking a long, slow walk in the sand, let these spring and summer days be yours to rejuvenate the soul.
