Wesley Trust

Wesley Trust
Endowing the future, serving the faith

WHAT: The Wesley Trust is a cherished part of life at Myers Park United Methodist Church. It was founded in 1983, primarily to create an endowment to focus on capital projects related to sustaining the campus and buildings. Much of the money has gone for repairing and protecting the beautiful stonework for which the church is known.
WHO: Officers are Chairman Dixon Crum, Vice Chairman Roger Privette and Secretary Courtenay Miller. Other trustees: Bonnie Fleming, Bill Grigg, Laurie Guy, Jerry Richardson, Ed Spears and Meredith Thompson. Ex-officio members: Dr. James C. Howell, senior pastor, and Business Administrator JoAnn Horstman.
WANT TO LEARN MORE?: Call Business Administrator JoAnn Horstman at 704-295-4844. Each issue of the new quarterly church magazine, Intersection, will profile a different aspect of the Trust.
WANT TO HELP?: To support the Wesley Trust, checks can be made out to Myers Park United Methodist Church (designate "Wesley Trust" on the memo line) and sent to 1501 Queens Road, P.O. Box 6161, Charlotte, N.C. 28207-6161.
HOW MUCH: A $5 million gift from the estate of a church member in the mid-1990s allowed the trust to expand by supporting outreach efforts, largely through Jubilee grants. The Trust stands now at $9.8 million, on which only the earnings can be spent. Trustees have approved spending about $450,000 in 2007, of which $200,000 will go for outreach through those Jubilee grants. In 2006, Jubilee grants went to Charlotte Rescue Mission, a Christian ministry which works with those fighting alcohol and drug abuse, and a Methodist church in Sri Lanka, among a dozen others.
