Here are critical and immediate opportunities to serve through Myers Park UMC. Each one of these ministries has an urgent need that you can meet with your gifts, passions and abilities. When you find one that interests you, contact the ministry point person listed so you can learn more and Try it Once!
AV Team: If you're not intimidated by technology and would like to enhance the worship experience for our congregation, we invite you to give our AV Team a try. You can operate the sound board or a camera or run PowerPoint for one of our sanctuary or Church in the Round services. If Sundays don't work for you, we could always use your help at one of the many events we host here at the church. We'll teach you how to use the equipment and will give you the opportunity to try it once with an experienced volunteer to see if this is a good fit for you. Contact Boyd Hood at 704-295-4825 or bhood@mpumc.org .
Care Team: Be a part of a team that offers practical support to individuals and families with health concerns. Support may include running errands, trips to the doctor, bringing a meal, writing notes of encouragement, etc. For more information, contact Ann Edwards at 704-362-0268 or aedwards52@carolina.rr.com
Haiti Mission Team Organizer: If you have a heart for helping the poor in a third-world nation, but can't travel, you can make a difference by helping coordinate our mission team to Haiti. You can support the team with logistical planning - setting dates, keeping up with contacts and interested team members, planning for team activities and work in the area, keeping up with details on the ground in Haiti, etc. To learn more, contact Steve James at steve@mpumc.org subject: Haiti
Homebound Visitation Coordinator: Help keep loneliness at bay for homebound members of our church. Coordinate our team of visitors, and help match those who are interested in serving with a homebound member. Serve from home at a time that's convenient for you. For more information, contact Mary Dula at maryadula23@bellsouth.net
Room in the Inn: Join our church as we spend time with 12 homeless guests, seeking and receiving food and shelter in our church. Take part in set up and clean up, prepare and serve the meal (dinner or breakfast), enjoy fellowship, spend the night or prepare bag lunches. You can choose to serve on a Thursday or Friday evening (or the following mornings). Contact Greg Wells at 704-844-0665 or wells@mindspring.com
Room in the Inn at the Urban Ministry Center: While you may be familiar with Room in the Inn - the ministry that provides those who are homeless with a hot meal and a warm, dry place to sleep here in our church and others - you may not know that volunteers are needed at the Urban Ministry Center, where Room in the Inn originates. Serve at the Urban Ministry Center and check in our homeless friends being served by Room in the Inn, and help assign them to their church home for the night. Help is particularly needed Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings at the Center. For more information, contact Todd Steck at tsteck@urbanministrycenter.org
Sunday Information Center Host: Join us one Sunday morning in welcoming our visitors and members by answering the phone and helping out at the front desk in the lobby. Choose one of three shifts: 8:15 - 9:30 a.m., 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. or 10:45 - Noon. We'll show you the ropes beforehand and you'll be ready to go! Contact Christine Mull at cmull@mpumc.org
Uptown Men's Shelter: Prepare and/or serve dinner at the shelter with others from our church the first Wednesday evening of every month. Stay and share in the meal together and enjoy the fellowship of the guests. Contact Kelly Sercer at 704-222-3634 or ksercer@leelighting.com
Urban Ministry Devotions: Take your lunch break early and lead a 30-minute devotion mid-morning (10:45 - 11:15 a.m.) for three or four folks who are hungry to discuss faith at the Urban Ministry Center. For more information, contact Alan Frey at 704-444-9996 or alan@carolina.rr.com
WISH Hope Team: Hope Teams are forming at the church to help the working poor through a new citywide ministry called WISH -- Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing, which provides rent supplements and helps those who were once homeless get back on their feet again. As WISH provides the rent supplements and a social worker to assist families, Hope Teams will provide help of another kind. Each Hope Team will form a relationship with a WISH family that has identified 2-3 life goals, and will empower that family to achieve those goals. As a Hope Team member you can help the family learn to manage their finances, assist them with job seeking skills, help a parent earn his/her G.E.D, tutor a child or provide other, much-needed encouragement. This is not a financial commitment, but a commitment of your time and abilities as you and your team work to empower a family to achieve their dreams. For more information contact Lisa Howell at 704-488-5227 or lisaruns@carolina.rr.com
