"But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord." Joshua 24:15b NLT
Before you finalize your summer plans, make sure you schedule some time to serve together as a family. Below is a list of family friendly serving opportunities, ideal for families with middle and high school age students. Find an opportunity that interests your family, contact the person listed and give it a try! This may be one of the most meaningful things your family does all summer!
AV Team: You and your youth can run the sound board and operate the camera to record one of our sanctuary services. (Help is especially needed to run the sound board at the 8:30 worship service.) Or run PowerPoint and audio in Church in the Round. Contact JoAnn Horstman at 704-295-4844 or jhorstman@mpumc.org
Champions for Children: This summer, you and your family can begin a relationship with a child from the South Tryon community. Visit this child at least once a month, and contact them weekly. This is a commitment of time, not financial resources, as you seek to develop a relationship with the child and his/her family. One year commitment. For more information, contact Elizabeth Ignasher at 704-295-4826 or eignasher@mpumc.org
Crisis Assistance: Assist in receiving, sorting, inspecting and hanging clothing donations for Crisis Assistance Ministries. Volunteer anytime Monday – Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday morning shifts are also available. Contact Kristin Adkins at 704-371-3001 ext 114 or volunteer@crisisassistance.org
Family Promise: This new ministry serves homeless families as they are housed one week per quarter at Myers Park UMC. You and your family can make a difference in these families’ lives by welcoming them to our church, preparing and serving meals, playing games, reading books, creating crafts or organizing an activity with them. Be prepared for these families to make a difference in your lives as well. Next date: September 23-30. Contact Lauren Marsh at 704-807-3330 or lauren.e.marsh@gmail.com
Friendship Trays: Sub for vacationing volunteers by delivering meals to elderly members of our community who are homebound (similar to Meals on Wheels). Drivers are especially needed on Thursdays from 11:00am-12:30pm, though there are opportunities to serve on other days as well. Meals are already prepared. Serve as often as you like, based on your availability. Contact Frances Baldwin at franciethat@gmail.com or 704-365-0392 for more information or to try it once.
Love INC: Yard Work for the Elderly
Love INC (In the Name of Christ) provides services for those whom no other agency in our community can help. Church members from 150 churches in our area volunteer to help their clients. You and your youth can do yard work for the elderly who can not do the work for themselves, and can not afford to hire someone to do it. For more information, contact Love INC at 704-536-5588 or volunteer@loveinc-charlotte.org
Movie/Game Night at South Tryon Community Church: Get to know our neighbors in the community surrounding South Tryon Community church by playing games and watching movies on the third Friday evening of the month from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. The next date is August 17th. Contact Elizabeth Ignasher at 704-295-4826 or eignasher@mpumc.org
Trinity’s Table: Help set up/clean up, cook, serve and join in the fellowship of this free community lunch at South Tryon Community Church. This lunch not only feeds the hungry, but also helps to build relationships in the communities of STCC. Serve any Tuesday or Thursday during August. Contact Amy Chiott at 704-661-9920 or amychiott@kw.com or simply show up at 11:00 a.m.!
Second Harvest Food Bank - Warehouse: You and your youth (age 14 and up) can help sort, inspect, re box and stock food that goes to local agencies. Also, on an as-needed basis – pack food in boxes for seniors or backpacks for kids. Serve any time, Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. For more information, contact Mary Anna Richbourg at 704-376-1785 ext. 17 or marichbourg@secondharvest.org
Ushering: Ushers are particularly needed during the summer months. Choose the worship service and the Sunday(s) that works best for you. Greet church goers with a smile as you help them find seating, distribute bulletins, assist in the offering and guide congregants during communion. To serve during the 8:30, 9:45 or 11:00 worship services – contact Jerry Brady at 704-552-6742 or jerrybrady@coxandcompany.com. To serve during the 8:45 Church in the Round service – contact Dee Bailey at 704-564-3632 or charexec@mindspring.com
