UMW Special Mission Recognition: Betsy Scott was awarded a Special Mission Recognition pin by United Methodist Women for her wonderful acts of service. Her leadership as our outreach coordinator has put Mary Circle on the map at our church and has earned our circle’s reputation as a leader in local mission work. Congratulations, Betsy!

Thank you also to everyone who contributed to this special meal. Thank you to Catherine and Betsy for coordinating our December meeting service project. We filled and “wrapped” gift bags that were given to children at the CHAMP Kids Christmas Party.

Circle News/Reminders/Announcements
Goodness Gracious! gift shop needs volunteers. Even if you can volunteer for only two hours a month, they would love to have you. If you’re interested, stop by the store.

Trailblazers dinner: On Sunday, December 12, we will provide dinner for the Trailblazers, a Sunday School class for special needs youth age 16 and older. Dinner will be a taco bar from Salsarita’s and Christmas cookies for dessert. If you would like to help with this dinner in any way, please contact Catherine O’Neal (catherinekoneal@gmail.com), who is leading this effort. Thanks to Shane Page for joining us this morning to tell us more about this group.

UMW Christmas Dinner: All circles are involved in putting together this event. This year we’re responsible for collecting payment at the door. We need a couple of volunteers for this. Please let Jamie or Katharine know if you can help.

Upcoming meetings: December 14 -- We will enjoy breakfast and fellowship and participate in a service project. Please bring a breakfast item to share. January 18 – We will finish our book discussion. Jamie is looking for a speaker to address marriage. February 15 – Speed Dating. March through May is open at this point. If you have any ideas about what to read or discuss or how to spend our meeting time, please share them by emailing Jamie (jamieccurtis@gmail.com) or Katharine (kcwillis@carolina.rr.com). We’d love to hear your ideas.

Breakfast with Mary – Saturday, December 4, 9:00 a.m., Jubilee Hall
The registration form is on our website – www.mpumc.org/marycircle. Forms will also be available at our registration table this Sunday, November 21.

Due to a change in plans, Shebra will now be able to cater our breakfast. The menu will include plain and ham biscuits, danish, something yummy, cereals, fruit, juice, milk, and coffee.

We will offer only one craft kit: a shepherd, sheep and angel. Next year we will introduce three more figures and then the following year we will start the cycle again with the Mary, Joseph, and Jesus set. This will allow everyone, no matter when they start attending, to make the full nativity scene.

Thanks to everyone at the meeting for assembling our craft kits. And special thanks to Katherine Weikel, Leslie Lowery, and Betsy Scott for their work on these kits, and to Jen Wouters and Sara Blakeney for helping to paint.

Here are the current volunteer sign-ups. If you can help fill in the empty spots, please let Jamie or Katharine know.

• We will sell stable kits again, but want to offer an additional item, such as a star. The proceeds of these sales will be donated.

• We will have a registration table in the lobby of the Parish Life Building on November 14 and 21.

Circle News/Reminders/Announcements
• Welcome to Melissa Hamilton, Carrie O’Brien, and Lisa Peterson, who joined us for the first time today.
• Joy: Today marked one year of breast cancer survival for Katherine Weikel’s sister, Susan.
• New Parent Visitation Committee is looking for members. There are no meetings to attend. Simply pick up a casserole and take it to a new parent. Betsy Scott served on this committee and found it very rewarding. If interested, contact Liza Zopp. Also needed are people to make casseroles!
• Children’s Ministries’ K-5 Fall Service Project is Sunday, October 10, 3:00-4:30 in Jubilee Hall. Children (kindergarteners through fifth graders) will participate in projects benefitting Room in the Inn, Crisis Assistance Ministry, Hospice, and our homebound members. Questions? Contact Katharine Willis.
• Breakfast with Mary update: Currently scheduled for December 4, we will try to move it to December 11 because Shebra will be out of town on the 4th. If we are unable to reschedule for the 11th, we will have to cater the event ourselves. In addition to offering Mary, Joseph, and Jesus figures, we will offer a shepherd, sheep and angel kit. Katherine Weikel, Leslie Lowery, and Betsy Scott are looking into this.
• Fall program: We’re going to switch gears and focus on marriage. We will read The Four Seasons of Marriage by Gary Chapman and discuss it at our October, November, and January meetings.

Upcoming Events
• 2nd Annual Breakfast with Mary, Saturday, December 4, 9 a.m., Jubilee Hall. Note: Looking to reschedule for the 11th. We will keep you posted.
• Christmas Dinner, Tuesday, December 7, 7 p.m., Jubilee Hall: We are not expected to plan or execute any of the major components of this event, but we need to attend. We’ll gather for a pre-dinner beverage.
• 5th Annual Women’s Retreat, January 28-30, 2011 – For details and to register, contact Christine Mull.

Community Outreach Update from Betsy Scott
• Thanks to all of you who brought books to be donated to Julia’s Coffee and Books, which is part of the Habit ReStore benefitting Habitat for Humanity. Last year, over $100,000 was raised through book sales alone, which almost completely funded two homes that were built.
• Church member Holly Hinkle is collecting women's business clothing, new undergarments, feminine hygiene products and toiletries to benefit the new Care and Share Closet at South Tryon Community Church. Contact church member Holly Hinkle at 704-663-9406 or hinkleholly@yahoo.com to make a donation or volunteer with this effort.
• A BIG SHOUT OUT to the following Mary Circle members who helped sort the school supplies benefitting CHAMP and other children: Katharine Willis (along with her children Jackson and Elizabeth), Wendi Brown (and her son Jacob) and Mary Margaret Boulware. Thank you for giving so generously of your time!

Meeting
• We played the “Purse Pandemonium” game. Who knew we carried so many markers, silly bands, lipsticks, sippy cups, old pennies, and Chick-fil-a sauces in our bags? And Jamie presented “What’s in Your Purse?”, a devotional from Julia Bettencourt.

Coming Up
Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 19 in room 110. We’ll discuss Part 1 (through page 61) of The Four Seasons of Marriage by Gary Chapman.
